The Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation 2024 Author Series will feature Alexander Starritt, the 2021 DLPP Fiction Winner for We Germans, in conversation with moderator Jordan Ritter Conn, the 2021 DLPP Nonfiction Runner-up, on October 10 at the David H. Ponitz Sinclair Conference Center at Sinclair College. The event, which is sponsored by Sinclair College and open to the public, begins at 6 p.m. with drinks and hors d’oeuvres before Conversation with the Authors, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 with a 50% discount for students and can be purchased below. All proceeds from the event support the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation.
Starritt’s powerful novel, We Germans, tells the story of an ordinary German soldier in World War II, as he comes to terms with his crimes and guilt in a letter written decades later to his grandson. Praised for its intelligence and eloquence, the novel is both historic and timely in its exploration of the nature of evil and a society’s perpetuation of it.
The Author Series’ Conversation with the Authors is an outgrowth of the Student Author Series, begun in 2010 to return former winners of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize to Dayton to meet with area high school students, who are studying their books. Initially hosted by the Miami Valley School, the program has grown to include more than 15 Dayton-area schools, whose students attend a lecture and meet in person with the author, and International Baccalaureate Schools in other Ohio cities, who participate virtually. Classrooms receive a set of 25 books provided through the DLPP Fly with Doves Membership program and a curriculum. Since 2010, more than 4,000 students have participated in the Author Series and author’s lecture, which will be held this year on October 11 at Fairmont High School in Kettering.
